Munyumbwe Suspended Pedestrian Footbridge Project Slide Show Community Name: Mangango Bridge Sponsors: Palmetto Group & Rotary Clubs of Gloucester Point and City Center of Newport News, Virginia Partners: GITEC and District Council of Gwembe Bridge Designers and Construction Coordination: Zoe Pacciani Trainees: Dedication: Memorial: Volunteers: River Name: Nankoli River Bridge Name: Munyumbwe Bridge Span: 80 meters Pedestrian Footbridge Type: Suspended Pedestrian Footbridge Population served by bridge: Total population served for the surrounding 4 villages estimated at 1000 people Expected Traffic: Estimated daily traffic of 250 people. Bridge Completion Date: Bridge story: It takes a lot of convincing to get a qualified teacher to move out to Munyumbwe to work at the local school. Last year that teacher got malaria. In Zambia malaria is common and easily treated if and when treatment can be reached. But the Munyumbwe school teacher didn’t reach treatment in time last year . . . because the Nankoli River was swollen with flood waters and no-one could pass to get the vital medicine. That won’t happen again. This year a bridge will be built so that anytime, in any conditions, anyone can safely pass over the river.
