Yabus Suspended Pedestrian Footbridge Project Slide Show Bridge Sponsor: Serving in Mission Bridge Designers & Construction Coordination: Eli and Bethany Fader and Phillip Greene Bridge Name: Unity Bridge River Name: Yabus River Bridge Span: 75 meters / 250 feet Pedestrian Footbridge Type: Suspended Population Served by Bridge: 60,000 people Bridge Story: Yabus is divided in half by a river. Here is what each side has to offer: The northside has the marketplace, clinic, airstrip, primary school and roads to the northern part of Sudan. It is home to the Bertah, Mabaan, and Uduk tribes. The southside has the secondary school, farmland, and roads to the southern part of the country. It is home to the Coma and Ganza tribes. Unifying these two sides of the river will benefit 60,000 people and further the growth of one of the least developed places on earth. During the rainy months (August through November) they are not able to get across. Of course there is the problem of getting to the other side because over there is the hospital, town, relatives, and airstrip. During the time when their crops are ripe and ready to be sold, they cannot take them to the market to sell them. For a sustained and future economy, this bridge is essential. The river gets really big (230 ft. wide) during the rainy season and really small (15 ft wide) during the dry season. Right now there exists a small low water crossing "Irish" bridge which water flows over the top of it for the months of May through December. For the months of August through November it is impossible to cross on the bridge by foot or vehicle because the water is too deep.
