Bridge Story: San Francisco is a small community of about 500 families, several miles from the city of Esteli. The Quebrada Oscura divides the community into two, and when the rainy season comes, the people on one side of the river cannot reach their crops, while those on the other side cannot reach the highway and the schools. During the last two years, the rains have been torrential and have isolated San Francisco for weeks on end, causing people to risk their lives crossing the river when their community started running out of food and medicine.
