Sowell, Jr. Memorial: River Name: Rio Citalapa Bridge Name: Gavilan Suspended Bridge Span: 120 meters Pedestrian Footbridge Type: Suspended Population Served by Bridge: Approximately 1000 people Expected Traffic: Approximately 175 per day Bridge Story: The bridge between the two remote communities of San Diego and San Bartolo, Nicaragua, will serve over 1000 people with an anticipated traffic of 175 people per day. During the rainy season (May-October) the waters rise so high in the Citalapa River, it is dangerous and impassible. The construction of this bridge between these two communities, will allow several hundred school children to reach the local schools, improve trade between several villages, and allow people to receive medical care. University of Notre Dame Engineering students will be constructing the bridge with of the people of both communities.
