Liberia

Bridges to Prosperity Board member Ken Hodge and Bridges To Prosperity's Avery Bang traveled to Liberia in December 2009 to complete a feasibility study for future work in the country. The conclusion of the study was that the need for infrastructure in the country is immense. The civil war that ravaged the country side left many areas completed isolated. Lofa county, in the northwest region bordering on Guinea, saw as much as 95% of their infrastructure either destroyed or unmaintained during the last 25 years. Liberians are already familiar with 'the monkey bridge', for over 100 years, vine-woven swinging bridges, suspended to the surrounding trees, have crossed rivers with spans as great as 60 to 70 meters. The annual repair that is required of the communities will lend itself incredibly well for maintainence of Bridges To Prosperity bridge projects. A tentative pilot program bridge is slated to break ground in November 2010 near the capital city of Monrovia. USAID funded Liberian Agency for Community Empowerment (LACE) has verbally committed to the program and has encouraged a second pilot project a LACE project community in Grande Bassa county.
