The community is very well organized and worked together towards other communal projects before. The bridge was built for the community members to be able to cross the river that divides the community during the rainy season. The primary function of the bridge is to allow access for children attending school, and to provide year-round access for other communal activities. The Binghamton, New York - El Charcón, El Salvador Sister City Project, brought the project to the attention of Bridges to Prosperity and helped form a local alliance that ensured the project was both locally appropriate and sustainable. With the generous support of Rotary Clubs, the community of El Charcon now have year-round access. Additional support was provided by Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) of the US. PB supported the bridge with both volunteer support as well as raised support offset the cost of local materials.
