Ken Hodge was born in Liberia; West Africa, grew up in Staunton, VA; earned a bachelor’s degree, in Forestry and Wildlife Management, from Virginia Tech; and an MBA from the Darden School of Business at UVA. He worked for three and a half years, in Liberia, first for Firestone Tire as a rubber planter and then, for a subsidiary of Getty Oil, as an accountant. In the mid 1970’s, Ken returned to Virginia and settled in Newport News. For more than thirty years, Ken has been active in the insurance industry while he served on numerous committees and held offices in related associations. Ken has earned the CLU designation and holds various NASD licenses. He is the founder and President of Benefit Plan Services – a company that focuses on providing extraordinary services to its insurance clients.
Within his community, Ken has served as President of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the MS Society; participated actively with the Boy Scouts; coached youth baseball and soccer as his children were growing up; served as President of the Rotary Club of Newport News and is their current Treasurer; developed the current Rotary Youth Exchange program for District 7600; is an Elder and member of Yorkminster Presbyterian Church.
Together with fellow Rotarian Ken Frantz, Ken has helped lead the Rotary Club of Newport News’ efforts to be awarded a $360,000 Rotary International 3H Grant to imbed Bridges to Prosperity technology in Zambia. To support the Club’s effort to raise $60,000, Ken has a regular schedule for making presentations to Rotary Clubs and, in December of 2008, he will lead, a fund-raising focus event. Katie, son Ryan, and Nasho Sombe – the son of Zambia Rotarian Rocky Sombe, they will ride four BMW motorcycles on a five week, 9,000 mile trek from Lima, Peru back to Newport News, VA. Along the way, they will visit numerous Bridges to Prosperity sites. Ken and his wife Cindy live in Newport News, have four children and, by early September of 2009, will have two grandchildren. Ken serves as the Rotary Liaison for Bridges to Prosperity.
