Bill Ellenbogen was born and raised in New York. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Virginia Tech. Upon completion of his bachelor’s degree, Bill played professional football. He was associated with several NFL teams, including the New York Giants from 1976 to 1978. Bill retired from professional football in 1980 and opened Bogen’s in Blacksburg, VA in 1982.

He also became involved in commercial and residential development projects, and in 2004 gave his restaurant to his employees and moved full-time into development. Bill has been an active member of the Blacksburg Rotary for over 20 years. He has volunteered extensively with the Huckleberry Trail., a rails-to-trails project located in Blacksburg and the surrounding areas, and has served as the President of Friends of the Huckleberry for almost 20 years. In this capacity, working with Virginia Tech, the town of Blacksburg, the town of Christiansburg, Montgomery County, and numerous private landowners, the length Huckleberry Trail has been extended from 1 mile to 6 miles and the trail now connects the towns of Christiansburg and Blacksburg.

Bill enjoys golf, sports, skiing, and travel. Bill lives in Blacksburg, VA with his wife, Janet, and their two children, Matt and Courtney.

Bridges To Prosperity is a volunteer based charity that seeks to empower poor African, Asian and South American rural communities through footbridge building, thereby advancing personal responsibility, community public works, economic prosperity, and access to schools, clinics, jobs, and markets.
